The selection for The Best Lawyers In America is based on general surveys that are filled out by leading attorneys. The surveys are customized according to practice area and geographic area, and the voting attorneys rate how likely they would be to refer cases to the candidates, should the need ever arise, according to Best Lawyers' methodology. Ratings are given on a scale of one to five, and there is room for comments. The results are then reviewed by the Best Lawyers editorial staff, which makes the final selections and verifies that the lawyers are in good standing with their state bar associations.
Attorneys are chosen from each U.S. state, as well as from the District of Columbia. Previous inclusion in The Best Lawyers In America is not a free pass to be included in the publication again—while these lawyers are automatically nominated, they must again undergo peer review and receive high ratings.
